The terms “classic” and “canon” are fraught. Who decides what book is part of the canon? What makes a book classic? Even “modern classics” may not have the same appeal or relevance fifty years from now, so nothing is timeless. Students want choice and relevant texts, and nothing replaces the right book for the right reader at the right time. We understand that you’re busy and that bringing a new book into your classroom is a lot of work—it’s difficult to replace a text that has been a legacy in your curriculum. We’ve created this brochure to suggest how you can modernize your classroom to provide more choice and relevant texts for your students. These are just suggestions for pairings (or replacements) for these classic texts and in no way are meant to be the only books to consider.
