Can we all agree that we can’t wait for 2020 to be over? It’s been a rough year for everyone—including myself—and I’m counting down the days until the next chapter begins. I’m looking forward to all of the things that 2021 will bring. New friends, new adventures and, most importantly, new books!
This upcoming year, we’re publishing a lot of exciting books that I absolute love. Some of them were so sad that I cried big fat tears. Others were so addicting that I stayed up until 3AM reading. 2020 might’ve been a little disappointing, but I’ve always thought that our books have been amazing. And our 2021 lineup is no different!
To celebrate the new year, I wanted to share my favorite books that’ll be publishing in the spring. So, pop that champagne bottle early and find your first read of 2021!
A NEW DAY

Looking for a fun, energetic, and heartwarming read-aloud for your classroom or library? Look no further because A NEW DAY is all three things and more! From the bestselling author of Ordinary People Change the World and Caldecott Medal-winning illustrator of Beekle comes a rambunctious and big-hearted story of kindness. Brimming with goofy scenes, colorful illustrations, and zany humor, this picture book will teach your kids to appreciate all the small and big things in life. Perfect for fans of The Day the Crayons Quit and Cindy Lou Who!
J.D. AND THE GREAT BARBER BATTLE
By J. Dillard, illustrated by Akeem S. Roberts
In middle school, I once decided it would be a good idea to cut my own bangs. I’d never cut my own hair before and, unsurprisingly, my bangs turned out awful. I had no talent with a pair of scissors but some of us (thankfully) do! In this hilarious new illustrated chapter book series, eight-year-old J.D. turns a tragic home haircut into a thriving barber business. I usually don’t read chapter books, but this book was so entertaining that I had to include it in this list. J.D.’s strong voice and hilarious antics make this a swiftly paced and enjoyable read.
LAST NIGHT AT THE TELEGRAPH CLUB
By Malinda Lo
Remember how I mentioned the countless nights I stayed up late reading? I blame part of it on Malinda Lo. Acclaimed author of Ash, Lo returns with her most personal and ambitious novel yet, a gripping queer story of love and duty set in San Francisco’s Chinatown during the 1950s. Intensely romantic and heart-shattering, LAST NIGHT AT THE TELEGRAPH CLUB illuminates the intersection of queerness and Chinese-American culture as never before. If you’ve ever been in love, this book is a must-read.
